Mark Steven Brown

I have shaped my techniques through sustained observation: of color in tension and harmony, of

value organizing the visual world into structure, and of light reflecting off form, sometimes in

familiar, and sometimes in surprising ways. Observation, then interpretation. Physics to Play.

For me, painting is Play.

My work often moves toward “familiar abstraction.” I am drawn to representational subjects that

invite transformation—through atmosphere, brushwork, shifts in color, pruning of detail, or

reframing. These departures are not to withdraw from reality, but to study its component

attributes, then redistribute them in new proportions to build something new. I am particularly

engaged by color studies and value-based compositions.

Over time, I have absorbed ideas and approaches from several accomplished artists, most

meaningfully from Luana Luconi Winner, whose influence has extended beyond technique. From

her, I have observed patience and joy for the work — vital forces that sustain a creative life.

These qualities continue to inform not only how I paint, but why I paint. It is in this spirit—of

curiosity, exploration, and openness—that my paintings are made.

My time is divided between Blowing Rock, NC, Raleigh, NC. My work resides in private

collections, each piece carrying forward this spirit of inquiry—an invitation to pause, to look

again, and to find resonance within the familiar, transformed.
